Voices of Los Angeles, Shared Otherness Exhibition

California African American Museum, May 28 - Sept. 6, 2015

The Shared Otherness exhibition was a collaborative mixed-media exhibition referencing the community to which the University of Southern California and the California African American Museum belong.

My project partner, Ivan Blanco, and I sought to engage directly with our South Los Angeles neighbors, creating an interactive journalism piece, Voices of Los Angeles. As artists we believe it is our role to pose questions, not propose answers. We wanted to provide a platform for South LA locals to share stories that are not typically heard. Developing a rapport with strangers, we interviewed people about their relationship with Los Angeles and their hardships, victories, and aspirations. We mixed these interviews into an abstract audio recording that played on headphones in the exhibit and also designed and produced a large-scale vinyl installation utilizing quotes from the interviews.
